What days is Hill Top Farm closed?

Hill Top is generally closed on Thursdays and Fridays throughout most of the season. This occasionally changes — always check the National Trust website before you travel.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes — timed entry tickets are required and sell out weeks in advance during summer. Book through the National Trust website as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Is there parking at Hill Top?

There is no parking at Hill Top itself. Use the National Trust car park on the approach to Near Sawrey, a few minutes' walk away. On summer weekends it fills by mid-morning.

When does Hill Top open and close for the season?

Hill Top opens in late March or early April and closes for the winter at the end of October or early November. Check the National Trust website for exact dates each year.

How long does a visit to Hill Top take?

Allow at least two hours — roughly an hour in the house and 45 minutes in the garden. Many people spend longer, particularly in the garden.

What is the best time of year to visit?

May, June and September. The garden is in good condition, crowds are manageable, accommodation is easier to book and timed entry slots are obtainable with reasonable notice. The foxgloves peak in early June.

How busy does it get in summer?

Very. July and August require timed entry booked months in advance, the Near Sawrey car park fills early, and the ferry to Near Sawrey can queue. Weekday visits are significantly easier than weekends.

Is October a good time to visit?

Yes — the autumn colour at Tarn Hows and around Esthwaite is at its best in mid-October, crowds have thinned since summer, and accommodation prices have dropped. Hill Top operates on reduced hours and closes at the end of October.

Where do tours depart from?

Central Windermere, close to the railway station. We also pick up from Ambleside by arrangement.

How many people on a tour?

Maximum seven guests on shared tours. Private tours give your group the vehicle exclusively with no other guests.

Is Hill Top admission included?

No — purchased separately on arrival. National Trust members enter free. We pre-book your timed entry slot as part of the tour.
